The Anti-Hero by Sara Cate

I’ve been good long enough.

As the eldest son of Austin’s most prominent preacher, I’ve lived my life on the virtuous side. No scandals. Flawless image. Clean reputation.

That’s the way it must be if I’m going to take his place someday.

But everything changes when I find out my father is a VIP member of a local kink club.

A liar. A cheater. A hypocrite.

Now, I’m done being righteous.

And when the club owner’s jaded girlfriend comes to me with a proposal, I can’t resist.

Sage is nothing like the women I’ve dated before. Pink hair, tattoos, piercings. I know it’ll burn my father’s reputation to the ground when she and I are seen together.

But our fake dating scheme isn’t enough. We need videos—dirty videos.

The more we film these scenes, the more I like it.

She wants me to degrade her, hurt her, violate her.

And God help me, I want it too.

But it’s hardly fake anymore, and before long I don’t recognize the Goode man I used to be.

Sara Cate's THE ANTI-HERO takes readers on a thrilling and intimate journey with characters that are both complex and captivating. The novel delves into the intriguing world of revenge and dark desires, all while exploring the dynamics between the two main characters, Adam and Sage.

From the very beginning, it is evident that Adam and Sage have a unique bond. Their relationship is forged on a foundation of trust and communication, as they continuously check in with each other while navigating the dangerous waters of their vengeful plan. This dynamic adds depth to their characters and makes their journey even more engaging. Adam's dark side is a compelling aspect of his character, one that readers (ummmm me… I am ‘readers’) find incredibly attractive. I believe it serves as a reminder that humans are multi-faceted, and our private selves can differ significantly from our public personas; and that is totally okay! The exploration of this aspect of Adam is skillfully handled by the author, and it makes his character all the more intriguing to follow.

The intimacy between Adam and Sage is portrayed with a raw and authentic touch. As Sage opens herself up to him, readers witness the impact it has on Adam's self-discovery. The transformation from a preacher to, for lack of a better explanation, an amateur porn star might seem like an extreme leap, but it showcases the range of emotions and experiences these characters go through. The journey is both daring and enticing. I stayed up past midnight to finish this in one sitting.

Beyond the central romance, the novel contains an equally captivating setting - a unique and vibrant community that adds depth to the overall story. The Goode brothers and their mother provide additional layers of intrigue, enriching the narrative and making readers crave more.

However, for me there is a bit of apprehension towards the next installment in the series, titled THE HOME-WRECKER, which focuses on Caleb Goode. Despite my reluctance to read a story with such a title, Caleb's compelling personality and his role as Adam’s best friend and brother make it impossible to resist exploring his side of things. I think my anxiety (but let’s call it anticipation) highlights the author's skill in crafting well-rounded and engaging characters.

Overall, THE ANTI-HERO is a captivating read that takes readers on a wild ride. The chemistry and growth between the characters make for an exciting experience. The well-built setting and intriguing side characters further enrich the story. Overall, Sara Cate's skillful storytelling and intriguing plot leave readers eagerly looking forward to the next installment in the series.
