A Court of Mist and Fury - Sarah J Maas

Feyre survived Amarantha's clutches to return to the Spring Court—but at a steep cost. Though she now has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it can't forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin's people.

Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court. As Feyre navigates its dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms—and she might be key to stopping it. But only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future—and the future of a world cleaved in two.

“When books are like this I get so mad because I invest a lot of my free time and mind space into reading and it’s just a slap in the face when after all of it I come out like “eh, I didn’t NEED to read that, wasn't very entertaining and my life hasn’t been altered.” - a text to my boyfriend exactly 1/2 way through the book.

So now that I’ve finished, I will say the ending made it worth it. And let me just get this out of the way, chapter 55 did nothing for me. Sure I loved their honestly with one another (chapter 54), I loved the little game of “I already knew my answer before you started telling me your side” sort of deal, but the actual steamy scenes I kind of skimmed over (sorry). Overall, I felt the book may have been like 100 pages too long, I felt like some could have been cut in the beginning (as you can see from my text) but I understand why the book is built the way it is. I think, personally, the first maybe 2/3 of the book was a slow burn. I found myself wanting more dialogue, more passion, more anything to get me excited to turn the pages and continue on. We did eventually get there, and I think the twists and turns were worth the wait.

As far as characters go, Nesta owns my heart still. I still love Rhys, I like Feyre a little more, but with Nesta I feel a strange personal bond to. I loved the introduction to the Inner Circle, and all of their different personality types shining through. I found them quirky and endearing, sort of like a band of misfits trying to figure out how they all mesh together while ultimately working so well with each other. I don’t hate Lucien the way I assumed I would throughout the book, knowing what I knew before the book and after reading it, and I still think Tamlin is a little bitch (sorry for the vulgarity). Overall, I love my old characters but the introduction of new characters was welcomed and pleasantly received!

I think I’m beginning to understand the craze of this series but I just don’t find myself getting lost in it the way others do. Am I enjoying it? Absolutely. It’s cute, it’s entertaining (eventually), it’s flirtatious, so at the end of the day it’s everything I could ask for from a YA fantasy book. I think part of me was too hyped up, which I never let myself get, which is ultimately what my downfall is. Or perhaps part of me wants more new adult features? I mean if we’re going to have steam, let’s go strong. This was sugarcoated, pretty unrealistic (beyond the obvious of course) and lacked feeling besides the feeling the characters had of pleasure and closeness, I mean they seem to “make love” instead of most couples I know who simply fuck, a lot. That might be the cynic in me, so I do apologize.

The more I think about it the more I did enjoy the ride, which is the whole reason we read. A book doesn’t always need to be earth shattering, sometimes it just needs to take us somewhere new for a while. Get us out of our heads, and honestly this did exactly that.
