Now I’m a sucker for all things celebrity… Surely every
young adult is. The Accidental Movie Star by Emily Evans
captures what I believe it’d be like to fall for someone you “can’t” have.
How did Ashley spend her
summer vacation? Imagine the hottest guy in Hollywood. Do you see the girl next
to him, the one handing him a cup of coffee? Yeah. That’s her.
Interning on a major motion
picture is not all bad. She gets to watch some of the scenes and even offer her
opinion. “That kiss looked lame. Laughably weak. There’s no chance at an MTV
award with that kiss.” LOL.
Until the director says,
“Hey, Intern. Yeah, you. Ashley. You’re right. So, teach Caspian how to kiss.
Oh, and get in front of the camera. We're going to need you in this next
shot."
OMG.
Okay, I do have a few complaints
about it… No book is perfect. But I’ll get to those complaints later. The
character of Ashley is exactly what I would hope to be like if I meet a
celebrity; she’s calm, cool and sarcastic through out. She’s strong willed and
not easily swayed but Caz’s advances. Of course she gives in her even when she
does, she’s still careful. Caz, aka Caspian, could have had a more normal name…
But is character was interesting. He was bruiting, charming and well spoken but
also a tired, scared kid above it all. He very much shows off how down and
tired celebrities can get which many people choose to overlook. Thankfully his
flirty lines and charming ways keep me involved or else I probably would have
been bored with him.
The supporting characters, Powder,
the AD, Dad, Garrett, Petra and Olive, are all significant in shaping the
relationship between Ashley and Caz. Petra was a b*tch, very typical for the arrogant,
attention seeking “star.” Olive was also scheming too, which I felt everyone in
the novel should have put those pieces together. By them not, however, it kind
of accurately portrays the gap between the cast and crew in Hollywood.
My biggest issue with this novel was
the relationship between Ashley’ parents… They’re divorced and yet still in
love. I understand being civil after the divorce and even loving each other but
being in love still was weird. Plus, how their little tale ends annoys me to no
end. I thought it was pointless. I also didn’t appreciate that Caz was so
overly protective of Ashley then completely tossed her. It was probably quite
realistic but it still made me angry for some reason… Maybe because I was
rooting for them the whole time?
Overall
if you’ve ever had the dream to meet a hot young celebrity and fall in love
deeply, then you need to read this!
