We Were Liars - E. Lockhart

Hi there! Now I will have you know, it is very rare for me to cry over much. Books are about the only thing that can make me cry for more than 10 minutes. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart is probably one of the saddest books I’ve read.

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from National Book Award finalist and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

Read it.
And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

When I read this I thought, “let me get out of my fantasy comfort zone and try something different.” This 225 page books had me flipping out in the end. I was left a complete wreck of blubbering tears. For the most part, the ending was foreseeable. I would be lying if I said I knew exactly what was going to happen though, because she threw a twist in the book. A twist so compelling, it made me weak.

The book itself is a simple and short read. It’s written rather informally, and sometimes confusing when the author jumps through time laps and such. The story was easy enough to pick up on though. And the characters were realistic. The love story is amazing and heart breaking!  Lockhart puts a lot of emotion and a lot of events into such a short book.

Basically the story is a great read. Following a girl on her journey to remember her past and along the way, figuring out herself. In a lot of ways I feel for Cady and want her to be happy. Her family is a bunch of crazies that make it even harder for her to figure out what happened. When she does figure it out though; I cried. Cried for the last 20 something pages and cried for another hour after.

Compelling, quick and heartbreaking.
