After a betrayal derailed her interior design career, Liz Bennet found a fresh start in New York. Now an executive assistant by day and stage kitten by night, she's discovered a second home with the performers at Meryton, Manhattan's top-tier burlesque venue. Love's the last thing on her mind when she locks eyes with Will Darcy across the crowded club. The spark between them is undeniable--that is, until she overhears the uptight wealth manager call her merely "tolerable."
Bennet is determined to write Darcy off, but once their besties fall head-over-heels, they're thrown into each other's orbit again and again. Each encounter begins to feel more heated than the last, but is their chemistry enough to topple that terrible first impression? What's more, when a charming newcomer arrives on the scene with accusations against Darcy, his claims leave Bennet torn. And when a sudden development leaves Meryton's fate in jeopardy, she will have to decide who to trust in time to salvage her design dreams, her heart, and the stage she shares with her found family...
What a fun retelling of PRIDE & PREJUDICE!!! It has all of the fun tension between Bennet and Darcy but in this excellent modern NYC setting. The writing was excellent and I loved how King kept some of the best lines from Darcy but modernized them, like when he tells Elizabeth she bewitched him!
I LOVE the setting. I live in New York so any story that takes place here already has my attention. The modern rough edge of an NYC burlesque show mixed with this intense love story seemed silly in my head but when reading it I was like, “yup, this is works. This makes sense.”
I loved Bennet and her love of the strength and courage. I think throughout the story, the character did such an exceptional job conveying not only her emotions but her feelings revolving the show and why she partakes in it. I think any partner would have doubts like Darcy, possibly even more, and to hear Bennet actually take the time to explore why burlesque is important to her made me happy as a reader. It was a maturity we don’t often see in stories like this one. Darcy was typical Darcy. Super swoon-worthy, full of charm, sarcasm, and tension wrapped into a perfect leading man. The background characters were also extremely fun and you find yourself hoping the best for each of them.
I did think the storyline took a bit of a nosedive in terms of conflict resolution. The storyline with Darcy vs Wickham from childhood was glossed over (which is fine, I’m in it for the romance however I don’t love when authors build up this big rivalry that goes no where). I also felt that Wickham got away with what he did a little too easily. Again, I wasn’t here for that aspect I wanted romance but it was just really built up for it to go absolutely no where.
Overall I loved this story. I’m a big fan of Vanessa King’s writing style and she has found a fan in me! I’m excited to read more from her in the future!!!!
Rating: 4/5 I really enjoyed the one!
