A Life No One Will Remember. A Story You Will Never Forget.
France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever—and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.
Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.
But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.
WOW. While I found the book slow at times, I found the story fascinating and the dialogue fun. THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE does not disappoint.
The story is set over the course of 300 years, yes, 300. It tells the tale of Adeline, a girl who made a deal with darkness and how she grows, learns, and experiences life as a ghost; to be forgotten after leaving. Addie is an extremely strong, resilient, and interesting main character. She’s stubborn and fabulous. I love her, simple as that. I find her mature, not as mature as I imagine a 300-year-old, but what do I know? She has a curiosity about her that makes me think that living forever, although a curse in many ways, could be the most extraordinary adventure in other ways. She embraces it the best she can, adapts to the world around her, and successfully finds something every day that puts a smile on her face. I just love that!! Henry is sweet, and his story was completely out of left field for me. I LOVED that! I think he’s a bit dramatic at times for his age. Maybe it stems from his “artist” background, maybe it stems from his childhood, but I sort of wanted to shake him after a twist was revealed and say, “you stupid boy.”
And then there’s Luc. My my, I love him. I want to start off by saying I believe he is capable of love, and that he truly does love Addie. I think that of course, it’s a love out of comfort but I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing, especially here. I think with Luc and Addie it stems from no one truly knowing them, even before Addie made the deal no one knew her truly, hell even she didn’t know herself, or else she would have maybe made a better deal! And Luc was darkness, nothing but smoke and mirrors before Addie gave him a face and form. I think they’re more tangled in each other’s lives than even they know. And another thing, when Luc claims to be playing a game, to me I think it’s just a coping mechanism to make sure he doesn’t get hurt by Addie’s very human emotions. While I should maybe take it at face value and say, “oh he really is a jerk” part of me just think it’s a way to protect himself from the only thing that matters in his existence. I shouldn’t be romanticizing this dark twisted character but I can’t help it! I also just enjoy the way he was written. He’s a very smooth, well-spoken, powerful character which draws any reader to him. Even when he was being awfully terrible I couldn’t help but to hope for some redemption.
I did think the story was a bit slow. I understand why the story jumps around the way it does but I think it could have been a little shorter maybe? I didn’t need to hear SO much about her past to understand her in the present. What I loved was how quick these stories were! I liked that they were told quick like the memories were generalized because it’s been so long (although they have enough detail so it’s not like they’re fuzzy).
I cried so much in the last 50 or so pages I had to put the book down before the last chapter. What a wonderful ending. I thought it was perfectly summed up, and even though many people want more I think it ended so well. It left me hopeful and excited to fill in the rest of Addie’s story the way I want.
Rating: 4/5, ending was 5/5 amazing though
