For seventeen-year-old Fable, the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home she has ever known. It’s been four years since the night she watched her mother drown during an unforgiving storm. The next day her father abandoned her on a legendary island filled with thieves and little food. To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one, and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father, and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father.
But her father’s rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him, and Fable soon finds that West isn't who he seems. Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they're going to stay alive.
The world that Adrienne Young has created in Fable is so beautiful, interesting, and creative, that the world alone had my attention and love. I will say, this book is a bit of a slow burn. I definitely felt a little bored for the first hundred or so pages, until I realized just how much was on the line for each of the members of the Marigold crew, Fable included.
I loved how strong and clever little Fable is. She is resourceful and unfortunately had to learn the ways of the world at a young age, and by no fault of her own. Fable is a great character for any girl/woman to read about, as is Willa, the only other female aboard the Marigold. I love how strong minded Young wrote this young women. I also love West. I love a man with secrets when I'm reading and I think he fit my qualifications for a leading man perfectly. I really loved him towards the end of the book and can't wait to see where the story takes him and his crew. The other characters are lovable, silly, and great additions to the story; besides, you can't ru na ship with just one person... It takes a village.
I definitely recommend this book to any lover of YA. This is not super fast paced, until the end, but it does a decent job of keeping the reader engaged and wanting to continue. I think the writing style is easy to follow with fun dialogue that sounds and feels realistic. Overall, I say pick up your copy ASAP. The sequel, Namesake, releases March 16th and I have already pre-ordered my copy!
